Nature Printing Workshops
$50 per person ($40 Friends of Phinizy)
Join Master Nature Printer and teacher John Doughty for these one day adult workshops to learn nature printing using plants. Nature printing is done by applying ink to the surface of a natural object like a plant leaf and then pressing it onto another surface to leave an exact inked image of the leaf or object. The process is easy and fun, and no prior experience is needed – the art is already in the plants! All materials are provided. Old clothes or an apron is suggested as the inks are permanent. Please bring a sack lunch with you. There will be a half hour break for lunch. Class size is limited to 12 participants.

You will learn the techniques used to interpret a scene; how to establish a focal point; work in changing light; and apply paint using color, temperature and value effectively. Students may be beginners or advanced painters who wish to sharpen their skills. The class will take place in the outdoor education classroom on the main boardwalk. This class is being held in collaboration with the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art.
Students are asked to bring their own supplies. (See supply list here: Plein Air Supply List) Class size is limited to 8 students.

Drawing Patterns from Nature
$90 per person / $80 for Friends of Phinizy (Cost includes both sessions and all needed materials.)
Class Dates: July 9th and August 13th, 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Lead by local artist Jay Jacobs, this class is appropriate for the beginner and for those who want to brush up on their skills or to look at Phinizy in a new way through their art.
The first of the two sessions will focus on recognizing patterns in nature. You will receive instruction in the process of taking the patterns that the eye sees and then drawing that in a sketchbook with the idea that your observational sketches will later be used as subject matter for paintings. We will be walking the trails of Phinizy Swamp Nature Park and then stopping in specific locations to talk about drawing techniques and how you choose your subject matter and then allowing time to sketch. You will then have time to practice the techniques you’ve learned over the next month. The second session will have participants revisiting trails with drawing and sketch books for the first part of the session and then finding their way to the classroom to work on extracting imagery from their sketchbooks to apply to canvas.
Age: 16 years through adults
Register by calling 706-396-1427.
